The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is an eight jet-engine powered heavy bomber that has been flown by the United States Military continously since 1952, and is expected to be in service until 2040. The name "Stratofortress" is (again) a follow-on from its well-known (Boeing) predecessor, the B-17 Superfortress. The B-52 was the successor (and a great improvement over), the first true intercontential bomber, the B-36.
